Svetlana Smirnova’s roots are in the Russian mystical tradition, where flowers are seen as bearers of spiritual energy. Her studio is surrounded by her flower garden, on which she is always taking notes, on the lookout for the next painting.

Her Western influences begin with the great Dutch botanical painters and extend into the 19th century with Martin Johnson Heade and Henri Fantin-LaTour. She has been enthusiastically supported by art historian John Wilmerding, who is a frequent visitor to her studio and her gardens, and by the renowned painter Richard Estes, who has included her work in his private collection.
